What is a Vein Doctor?

Dr. Rau is known as a vein doctor, but what does that exactly mean? Dr. Rau answers your questions below:

What is a vein doctor?

  • A vein doctor or a vascular specialist has gone through specialized training and certification. They can diagnose and manage disorders that affect the arteries, veins and lymphatic systems. Vascular surgeons/vein doctors are also board certified in general surgery.

When should I visit a vein doctor?

  • Having abnormal looking veins are common. However, you should see a vein doctor when you are experiencing either embrassment and/or discomfort.

Does my insurance cover visiting a vein doctor?

  • Health insurance providers may cover your expenses for treatment if your vein treatment is for a medical condition. Click here to see a full list of insurance providers that we currently accept. If you do not see your health insurance provider, please give a us a call today.

How are varicose veins diagnosed?

  • We first ask about your family history of varicose veins, the duration and presence of any symptoms, and any worsening or expansion of the varicose veins. We will also take note of your height, weight, and other medical conditions. In addition, general inspection and palpation (feeling the veins) and evaluation for the presence of any bleeding or ulceration also is typically performed.

Standing up for about 5 to 10 minutes can make the veins more visible, and this may further aid in assessing the extent of the varicose veins. Click here to read more on varicose vein treatment
